This short piece does a good job at showing the wildly varying incentives in our dual-protagonists, despite being very similar characters. Hawkins alternates between their points of view, and accordingly, I would've liked more of a tonal difference between the characters because they sounded almost like the same person. Maybe that was intentional. Nonetheless, there are lots of parts that were funny, and Hawkins did well to be quick and punchy about these moments as to avoid narratorial intrusion. He also established tension early as well as demonstrated a command over the subject matter (Civil War reenactment), which is huge in a story, especially a short story.Product details

A Call to Arms A Story by Terence Hawkins edition by Terence Hawkins Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Droll and incisive, smart and clever, and a fast-paced read all around.
Hilarious! And turned in ways I didn't expect. Loved it!!
Hilarious evocation of the horror of early adolescence, from the perspective of a chubby middle-schooler compelled to participate in Civil War reenactments with his new stepfather. Free of sentimentality, but not without warmth.
Fun and quick send-up of Westport, CT, and upper-middle-class, adolescent horniness, step-dad bonding and faulty muskets.
Great, funny, insightful short story. Is there anything more awkward and bathetic than a young teenage boy roped into Civil War re-enactments with his "Noo Dad"? The author smartly avoids the tidy, predictable "heartwarming" ending in favor of something more... complex.
