"Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world. . ." Those words still ring true today; perhaps more now (in the adolescence of the twenty-first century) then at any other time in the nearly one hundred years since they were first committed to paper by Irish poet William Butler Yeats. Mere Anarchy is a collection of stories describing the dreams, nightmares, questions, and futures of a restless mind and a restless age. In these pages, Daniel E. Lambert transports you to times and places where the intellect of a great detective is copied into a robotic body, a jade statuette bends the fabric of time, a college student communicates with otherworldly visitors through her unusual hair style, and a con man is stung by the product of his own devious magic. Open this book and enter the world of Mere Anarchy a world with no longitude, no latitude, no road map, and no easy way out.

"I knew we were in trouble when Jesus started getting preachy with the guy in the stovepipe hat."--"My Dinner With Avatars"

Something here for everyone who loves genre fiction! I really enjoyed this selection of horror, science fiction, mystery, and even war fiction. Lambert does well when he goes into Ray Bradbury and Sherlock Holmes tribute fiction, and there are a couple of shocking horror stories that would work for the hardcore fan. As with the opening line I quoted above, Lambert's sense of humor is almost always in play, either in subtle or more obvious ways. I think that's what I like best in his fiction, perhaps; his sense that there is something humorous in almost every situation, being it pure silliness or the blackest of black humor.
Not all the stories have violence or sex, but enough of them do that I thought it prudent to mention it. Not that this is a bad thing, of course! There's a fun bit of erotica in one story as well as--let's just say a scary bedroom scene in another story.
I think this book would be most appreciated for its true sense of the love of genre fiction, and those who like horror and science fiction, especially with a Twilight-Zone type twist or a snide remark or two would probably enjoy this the most. Fans of Bradbury and Conan Doyle will get their money's worth as well.
It's also a good overview of the author's short fiction. It's not often that we get a collection that covers more than one genre of a writer's work, but here we get several. That's one of the things I like best about the collection. I'm looking forward to seeing more of his fiction in the future.

Daniel Lambert's Mere Anarchy, a book of shorts that surprises at every turn, is a collection of odd and intriguing flash fiction waiting behind a dark door, in an alley, at midnight. This collection of stories moves from "Dreams" to ""Nightmares," to "Questions," and ends with "Futures." I dove in to the Dreams section and began with "The Gazebo." This is a sexy solid story that was totally unexpected. I lit a cigarette after reading the last sentence! Then on to the Nightmares of "Holy Communion," which unfortunately, is based on real events. It was eerily conceived, unsettling to read, and left me with discomfort. That's what I like about Lambert's work. Whatever I read in this unusual collection gave me a strange sensation. How does he think of these stories? His writing is fluid and unpretentious. Mere Anarchy should be "...loosed upon the world."
Mere Anarchy is an appropriate title for Daniel Lambert's new release.
I was immediately squirming in discomfort as I read the opening story, "Caveat Emptor."
The setting begins with harsh weather, a bearskin cloak, and an antagonist who has diamond-studded teeth presumably slouching over a card table inside the Wounded Boar Alehouse. Readers are swept into an environment of tension and anxiety. Lambert's style reminds me of Edgar Allen Poe as he leads the reader through the mind of a protagonist who seeks violent revenge when he is wronged. Inevitably the reader is left unsettled by the end of most of these eclectic short stories; like many great writers, Lambert lets the reader grapple with the stories resolution - what exactly is the outcome between evil and morality and/or the conscious and subconscious? If you enjoy Poe, or Bradbury, or King, this collection of short stories won't disappoint.
